Competition entry 2011

The wall, archetype of all divisions, becomes in this project a unifying element, a meeting place, a strong collection of functions and activities of all sorts that articulate around the neighbourhood with the aim of involving as many people as possible in a wind-whirl of sociality, mutual exchange and human warmth.

This fil rouge wraps around a new born collection of public spaces, working as a theatrical backdrop to people’s everyday activities. A clear network of livable spaces is defined, pinpointing a series of well characterized subelements that facilitates the navigation around this piece of city.

Competition entry

The proposal rotates around three fixed and dense key elements that constitute, together with an extensive network of relations between points of interest within the project site and the existing city, the backbone onto which develop future programs.

A new neighbourhood:

- Built on flexible urban fabric
- Anchored to landmark pinpoints and to a network of territorial thematic routes for all users (pedestrians, bicycles, cars).
- Capable of balancing the existing city centre at any given moment in time thanks to a mix of interchangeable functions spread across the site.
- A natural extension to the existing city centre.
- A varied and lively environment for all its residents and visitors.

Kuori is an environmental art project initiated by Korkalo, our Helsinki based artist community. Its centre is a wooden pavilion built to function both as an environmental art piece and an art centre.

The program consists of exhibitions, performances, workshops and discussions about what is the role of culture and art in urban space during natural catastrophes and in post-catastrophic situations.

The starting point for the design is the Hexayurt, an open-source construction system originally planned to supply cheap temporary shelter at post-catastrophe sites.

Kuori is our take on this system, by which we hope to contribute to the global project.

Inspired by the modifications to the basic form proposed by Scott Davis and Dylan Toymaker, we tackled the problem of adapting the design to make it more suitable to host events and more similar to an art gallery.

Our idea was to create a hub, an enclosed space from which things could expand and contaminate the space of Hauhonpuisto Park. For this reason we planned our hexayurt so that two of the six walls effectively become a large gate opening onto the outside space.

During the day, when the yurt hosts events and happenings, space and activities flow freely between the hub and the park, while at night the yurt closes its doors, becoming a reassuring enclosed shelter.

The pavilion was mostly built with MDF panels kindly donated by the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Their black colour and shiny finish give Kuori a particulary slick appearance.

(in)visible city (Helsinki, Summer 2011) was installed in the courtyard between the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum.

The installation consists of three groups of transparent acrylic sheets mounted on large wooden frames. Each group of panels defines a portion of space across which a number of coloured pen-markers float in mid-air, suspended to barely-visible strings. Users are invited to choose their favourite colour and approach the panels to draw, write and express their thought on their life in Helsinki.

The event ran for 10 days, during which the spontaneous intervention of the public caused this typically under-used urban void to gain, day-by-day, more and more consistency, eventually resulting in the filling of this urban gap.

The main theoretical basis for this intervention resides in the recognized need for inner cities to undergo transformation and densification processes as opposed to the design and build of entire new parts of city solely based on an expansion logic dominated by an over-inflated property market.

Moreover, by calling the public to interact on the theme of city living, we aimed at stimulating the discussion on urban quality and life-styles and raising awareness on these issues.
